Cape Town students launch racing car

Automotive Motor Mechanic students at the College of Cape Town in Athlone have launched their first racing car at Killarney near Milnerton. The project began earlier this year.
Using a GTI Challenge Club formula for its race car, the car was designed from scratch with knowledge gained in the classroom and workshop.
Senior Lecturer Mogotsi Reuben Mokotedi at the college project was to provide students with opportunities.  “Ideally we want students to get employment within the motor racing industry. Our main aim is to get them into the fraternity, into the racing and expand their horizons even further,”
It began as a patchwork project and the different parts eventually melding together, students expressed excitement at being part of this project.
“In the beginning it was very hard because we didn’t have all the funding and parts we need for the car so we did it piece by piece through the year. As soon as we got the car we started on the car and kept faith from there that everything will come together and we have it ready at the end of the day,” says one of the students Brenden Oostendorp.
Another student,  Shaahid Ravat says: ” It’s quite amazing that we as the students got involved in the car. Some of us, it’s actually our dream to be on the track. We always wanted to know what it would be like and here we are part of a pit crew, and being involved in racing.”
