Position: Gearbox Fitter
Location: East Rand
Type: Permanent
Salary: Market Related
Starting date: ASAP/Immediately

Grade 12 with Fitter Qualification
Gearbox Specialist, with at least 4-5 years’ experience – strip, fault finding, repair, assemble & report
Computer literate

Must be able to read & understand blueprints and combine materials list, to obtain parts specs
Must be able to construct & fit structural components together, to create finished systems
Basic hand & power tools – hammers, drills, saws, etc.
Welding tools – to make structural components out of raw materials
Health & Safety Act.

Duties and responsibilities:

Fits /assembles structural frameworks & housings (from materials such as: angle iron, I-beams, and plate steel) by using hand tools & welding equipment, following blueprint specifications: examine blueprint & material list to obtain parts specifications
Lays out parts dimensions on worktable - using square, chalk line & soapstone
To provide jig for assembly, tack-welds scrap metal to outline
In order to fit them together, position parts in jig & files, chisels and grinds parts (as indicated)
Heating parts with acetylene torch, in order to bend (in vise, on anvil, or around stakes mounted in table) and dip parts in cyanide bath to harden
Tack-welds fitted parts together, or instruct FITTER HELPER to tack-weld parts
Compares dimensions of assembly to blueprint specs, using square/rule/callipers
Work tolerances - 0625 inch
Removing stresses of welding (may anneal parts with acetylene torch)
Fasten parts together with acetylene torch/ brazing rod


Must be physical fit & hands-on
Work well in pressurized environment
Detailed orientated
Need manual dexterity to operate various hand tools used, during their duties
Must have excellent mechanical skills to understand which tools to be used & how to use them
Must have excellent problem solving skills, to solving & repair system related issues
Strong attention to detail
Troubleshooting systems (knowledge on how systems are designed to perform)
Welding components out of raw metals
Collaborating with colleagues on larger projects
